게이? 레즈비언? LGBT? 성소수자 영어 용어 정리

과거의 폐쇄적이었던 한국의 성 인식과 달리 요즘은 그 인식들이 점차 개방되고 있죠. 서양의 다른 나라들은 성에 대해 개방적이기 때문에 다양한 종류의 성 소수자에 대한 용어들이 이미 생겨났는데요. 성 소수자에 대한 용어들을 살펴보도록 합시다. 성소수자를 의미한다고 알려진 'LGBTQIA' 는 무엇을 뜻할까요?

 

Lesbian : A female identified person who is attracted (romantically, physically, emotionally) to another female identified person. Most will refer to themselves as Lesbian, and some will call themselves Gay as an umbrella term.

 

Lesbian 은 여성 동성애자 레즈비언을 뜻하죠. 레즈비언은 여성에게 성적 매력을 느끼는 여성을 뜻합니다.

 

Gay : A male identified person who is attracted (romantically, physical, emotionally) to another male identified person. Gay is sometimes used as an umbrella term for all homosexuals or those who have a homosexual or same-sex attraction.

 

Gay 는 게이를 뜻하죠. 게이는 흔히 알고 있듯이 남성에게 매력을 느끼는 남성을 뜻합니다. 외국에서는 남성 동성애자, 여성 동성애자 모두에게 게이라고 부르고 있습니다. 즉, 외국에서는 동성애자를 총칭한다고 보면 되겠습니다.

 

Bisexual : Individuals who are attracted (Romantically, physical, emotionally) to both men and women.

 

Bisexual 은 양성애자를 뜻합니다. 남성과 여성 모두에게 성적 매력을 느끼는 사람을 뜻합니다.

 

Transgender : individuals whose biological sex is different than the gender with which they identify. Common ways this is expressed is “born in the wrong body”. Transgender individuals might not consider themselves as homosexuals, or even process in taking steps to change physically.

 

T 는 트렌스젠더를 뜻합니다. 본인의 생물학적인 성(sex)이 자신의 정체성과 다르다고 느끼는 사람들입니다. 참고로 태국이 역사적인 이유로, 트렌스젠더 분들이 많고 트렌스젠더 수술이 발달되었다고 알려져있습니다. 

 

Questioning : This is for anyone who is questioning their own sexuality and has yet to label themselves.

 

Qustioning 은 아직 본인의 성적인 정체성에 아직 의문을 품고 고민을 하고 있는 분들을 뜻합니다.

 

Queer : This is an all-inclusive term referring to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex people. While this term is used with the younger generation as uplifting and as an umbrella term, it can also be considered offensive to some in the community.

 

Queer 는 퀴어를 뜻합니다 이는 앞서 설명드린 모든 성소수자를 총칭하는 용어입니다. 우리나라에서도 퀴어축제가 매년 진행되고 그에 대해 다양한 의견도 나오고 있죠.

 

Intersex : Individuals whose physical sex characteristics are not categorized as exclusively male or exclusively female.

 

Intersex 는 간성을 뜻합니다. 이는 성기 등 신체적 특징이나 염색체, 유전자, 호르몬 등 성 구별 요소의 발현 정도가 전형적인 남성, 여성과는 다른 사람을 뜻합니다.

 

Asexual : An individual who is not attracted sexually to anyone or does not have a sexual orientation

 

Asexual 은 무성욕자를 뜻합니다. 성욕 자체가 없는 사람을 뜻하죠.

 

이렇게 성 소수자에 대한 용어를 모두 알아보았습니다. 성에 대해 개방적인 인식이 확산되면서 많은 성 소수자들이 인권에 대해 목소리를 높이고 있는데요. 어렵고 예민한 문제인만큼 서로에 대한 존중과 배려를 통해 의견을 조율해나가야한다고 생각됩니다.
